Everyone knows Labor Day as the unofficial end of summer.
In many areas of the country and Michigan, schools are already back in session. The holiday provides one last hurrah before it’s time to get serious about fall.
However, the holiday is also an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. Labor Day is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity and well-being.
If you’re looking to celebrate the roots of the holiday, check out the Labor Day parade in Manistee. Brethren Days has fun for the whole family. The Minnehahah Brewhaha has craft beer and tons of music. The Cold Creek Bridge Walk is a miniature version of the Mackinac Bridge Walk, with some history thrown in.
If you’re looking for something more low key, check out the book sale or plant sale in Manistee.
Whatever tickles your fancy, you’re sure to find it in Manistee or Benzie counties this weekend.

Benzie County bridge walk
The Cold Creek Bridge Walk is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Lake Street at the foot bridge over Cold Creek in Beulah.
Participants will get the chance to make the 23.5 foot trek over the bridge in the spirit of the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk.
