Director Ridley Scott has opened up about why one of his next movies is in a genre he’s never done before, explaining what influenced his decision to tackle something new. The longtime director’s original claim to fame was his sci-fi movies, having created both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises. While he would continue to expand the Alien movie timeline with prequels like 2012’s Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, he never got the chance to do the same with the Harrison Ford-led film. Instead, he began branching out into different genres across his career.
Despite creating two classic sci-fi franchises, Scott’s historical epics have become his claim to fame. These include Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Napoleon, with the upcoming Gladiator II also falling into this category. Other realistic films he’s done include Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies, and The Counselor, emphasizing just how much the director can embrace a multitude of film genres. This also indicates he can tackle a wide variety of ideas through his filmmaking, something that makes him more likely to create movies unique to his career path.
Ridley Scott Explains Why One Of His Next Movies Is A Bee Gees Biopic
The Director Has Never Done A Musical Biopic Before
However, despite the movies Scott is best known for, one of his next projects will be a biopic about the musical group the Bee Gees. Scott has created biopics before, including 2007’s American Gangster, loosely based on drug lord Frank Lucas, and 2017’s All the Money in the World, about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. His Napoleon movie is also a biopic about the French leader. But the director has never made a musical film in the genre before, meaning he’s entering a new world of filmmaking to bring his vision of the band’s story to life.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott explained why he’s making a Bee Gees biopic, explaining how he likes being “on thin ice” while creating his movies. The director explained how he’d never done anything musical in his films before, admitting the difficulty of crafting an engaging experience. He also explained he’d met with lead singer Barry Gibb already, someone he hadn’t talked to in 50 years, explaining how that also impacted his viewpoint on creating the movie. Check out what Scott had to say below:
I like being on thin ice, because if I’m on thin ice, then I’m already paying attention. I haven’t handled the physical process of movement and music [before in a film]. There’s nothing worse than an actor trying to be a rock star, and there’s nothing worse than a rock star trying to be an actor. Very few have done it, though I think Bradley [Cooper] did it pretty well [in A Star is Born]. I met [Bee Gees singer] Barry Gibb a month ago and I met Barry 50 years ago — so that was a f****ng time warp…
