Squid Game has managed to score a key Golden Globe nomination, despite not even being released yet. The Golden Globe nominations were announced today, revealing who will be up for awards at the January 5, 2025 ceremony. The ceremony gives awards for both movies and television. Leading the nominations this year were the Emmy-winning series The Bear on the television side, and Netflix’s Emilia Pérez on the film side. A number of the films on the list have not yet been released widely, due to the timing of the announcement with awards runs.
This Golden Globe announcement fascinatingly includes a nomination for Squid Game season 2 in the Best Drama category for television. Its nomination for Best Drama is particularly notable because Squid Game has not been released to the public yet, as it comes out on Netflix on December 26. Squid Game did not receive any other nominations this year.
What This Means For Squid Game Season 2
Squid Game Is A Unique Nominee

Squid Game season 2’s pre-release nomination is a rare feat for a TV show at the Golden Globes. While this is fairly common practice for movies, it is rare that any TV show has a release so late in December. Like any movie that is nominated for Golden Globes, however, the eligibility requirement for TV shows posits that all nominated shows have to release episodes to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s voting body by a certain cutoff date, which this year is November 4. Squid Game filled this requirement, and was thus eligible for awards for its sophomore season.

Squid Game season 2 is unique, however, in that it is the only TV Drama at the Golden Globes this year that is as of yet unreleased. The other shows up for the award this year include completed seasons of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Shogun, The Diplomat, and Slow Horses, as well as The Day of the Jackal, which is currently on the air. This will make things interesting when it comes to the voting body’s choosing of winners, as all five of the other series will have had more time to exist in the cultural milieu before voting comes along.
Our Take On Squid Game’s Nomination
Squid Game Season 2 Will Do Well On Netflix
Like most of the rest of the world, I have not yet seen Squid Game season 2, so I cannot comment as to whether it is deserving of a nomination. What I can say, though, is that the early awards attention is a great sign for the success of its second season. The holiday time release is already slated to be a high-traffic time for Netflix, but the fact that it is getting early acclaim could make even more people interested in Squid Game’s upcoming second chapter.
