Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy just confirmed that following Andor season 2, he will no longer be working with Star Wars. Andor season 2 is one of only two currently confirmed upcoming Star Wars TV shows, and its April 22, 2025, release date is just around the corner. There’s plenty of curiosity about what this second and final installment of Star Wars’ next TV show will entail, but, evidently, this is the end not only for Cassian Andor but also for the showrunner.
In an interview with Collider, Gilroy explained that, following Andor season 2, he will be walking away from the Star Wars franchise—and he doesn’t feel bad about it. Gilroy said:
“I’ve been peripherally involved for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that’s a pretty big chunk of my life. There are other things to do. I think when it’s done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I’m [not] feeling guilty about not chipping in.”
It’s a bit of a shame to hear that Gilroy’s time working on Star Wars movies and TV shows is about to be over, but, as he said, he’s already had an incredible impact on the franchise.
Tony Gilroy Leaves A Fantastic Star Wars Legacy
Gilroy Had A Major Hand In Rogue One In Addition To Andor
Close
Tony Gilroy has contributed significantly to Star Wars with Andor alone, but he also had a major hand in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is largely considered one of Star Wars’ best movies. This is particularly impressive given Rogue One is one of very few Star Wars movies that isn’t part of the Skywalker Saga, and it performed considerably better than its counterpart, Solo: A Star Wars Story. This movie also proved that Star Wars could successfully tell a story separate from the Sith, the Jedi, and the Skywalkers.

This laid the groundwork for Andor, which has also proven to be one of Star Wars’ best TV shows. Yet again, Gilroy’s contributions have shown that Star Wars doesn’t need to rely on the Skywalker family or the Jedi to have a brilliant story. Andor is about the boots-on-the-ground efforts of the Rebels and the “nobodies” who gave their all to bring an end to the Empire, and it has become one of the franchise’s most powerful stories.
Our Take On Star Wars’ Future After Andor
The Future Really Is Bright For Star Wars
Although I am sad to hear that Gilroy is departing, I am beyond excited to see what Andor season 2 will hold, and I believe Star Wars is about to take a turn for the better. There has been plenty of speculation and concern about the direction Star Wars will take moving forward, and I’ve admittedly been among the voices who are worried about the franchise’s future. As mentioned, Star Wars has only one other confirmed upcoming show, Ahsoka season 2, and it’s been difficult to know which of Star Wars’ upcoming movies are really happening.

Star Wars Celebration, which is also just around the corner this April, is undoubtedly about to change that with a host of movie and show announcements. I also believe The Mandalorian and Grogu and many other Star Wars projects coming down the line are going to build upon these recent successes for the better. Although it will be bittersweet to see Tony Gilroy walk away after Andor season 2, I remain hopeful about Star Wars’ future.
