GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The streets of downtown Grand Rapids came alive on Friday with a vibrant celebration.
Big Lake Brass and a circus of carnival performers led a Mardi Gras-themed parade down to the Grand River for a firework show on Friday, Sept. 19 to celebrate the start of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. Downtown was bustling with activity ahead of the opening celebration.
ArtPrize is an annual international art competition that launched in 2009 and kicked off on Thursday in Grand Rapids with 931 entries, from small paintings and illustrations to big, immersive experiences, created by over 1,110 artists.
The 16-day competition, which runs through Oct. 4, features special events, including artist workshops, concerts, live performances, and interactive exhibits. People can vote for their favorite entry, with the winner awarded a $100,000 grand prize.
A lively street party kicked off the evening with brass music, costumed performers, and pop-up interactive installations. A lantern workshop prepared families for the parade.
The New Orleans-style parade followed around 7:45 p.m., beginning at Rosa Parks Circle. Community members walked and others danced to the Pearl Street Bridge where a colorful fireworks show illuminated the night sky.
Grand Rapids resident Kara Bolt and husband Jason Bolt participated in full costume. Kara, who is known for exceptional Halloween costumes, was tasked with crafting papier-mâché jester and elephant masks to fit the evening’s eccentric theme.
Kara said events, like ArtPrize, have become part of the city’s identity.
“ArtPrize has changed a lot over the years, but its really cool we still get to have it here,” said Kara, who wore the Jester mask. “World of Winter, Return to River, ArtPrize — there’s so many cool art events.”
