Centauri girls comeback not enough against CSCS

LA JARA – The Centauri High School girls basketball team had a difficult third quarter when it hosted Colorado Springs Christian Saturday at the CHS gym.
The Falcons went scoreless in the third to fall behind 34-21. They did attempt a comeback in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as Centauri lost to the Lions 43-36.
Rose Ross made one of two free throws to give CSCS an early 1-0 lead. Paityn Sowards put the Falcons into the lead, but Ross came back with two free throws for a 3-2 Lions lead.
Rylie McCarroll hit a short jumper to help the Falcons regain the lead, but Ross again split at the line. Analynn’s jump shot gave the Falcons a 6-4 edge, but Jordyn Rollins drained 3-point basket for a 7-6 CSCS lead.
Sydney Haslett made one of two free throws to tie the score, and Macey McCarroll did the same to give Centauri an 8-7 lead. Ross made three of. Four free throws, but Rylie McCarroll made a layup to tie the score at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Lynide Sowards opened the second quarter with a jumper, and she later made a three to give Centauri a 15-10 lead. Capri Simpson made a 3-pointer for CSCS, but Dwyer scored in the paint for a 17-13 Centauri lead.
Simpson made another trey, and Rollins knocked down a jumper to put the Lions back into the lead at 18-17. Paityn Sowards tied the score with a free throw, and Kynlei Curtis scored from behind the arc for a 21-18 Falcons lead.
Ross was fouled attempting a 3-point shot and she made all three free throws to tie the score at 21-21 at halftime.
Rollins opened the third quarter with a layup, and Ross made back-to-back baskets. Mykayla Trujillo hit a jumper, Rollins a layup, and Ross made a 3-pointer for a 34-21 CSCS advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Rylie McCarroll snapped Centauri’s drought with a layup to begin the fourth quarter. Ross made another trey, but Dwyer split at the line.
Rollins made a jumper and then split at the line for a 41-24 CSCS lead.
Lyndie Sowards started Centauri’s comeback bid with a three, and Curtis followed with a layup. Haslett made two free throws to cut the deficit to 41-31.
Rollins made two free throws, but Curtis buried another trey and Haslett made two more free throws.
That would be the final scoring as the Lions held on for the seven-point win.
Curtis and Lyndie Sowards led the Falcons with eight points apiece.
Ross led all scorers with 20 points, and Rollins scored 14.
Centauri (2-2) will play in the Fifth Annual Alamosa-Centauri Christmas Classic at Adams State University’s Plachy Hall this weekend.
On Friday, the Centauri girls will play Gunnison at noon, and on Saturday, they will face Sargent at 10 a.m. Alamosa will play Gunnison at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
