Of all of the weeks, this week was truly one of them. Annapolis and Anne Arundel County were buried under several inches of snow, which was then topped off by freezing rain that turned all of it to ice. Hopefully, you’ve dug yourself out by now, because here are four cool things to do in Annapolis this weekend:
Polar Bear Plunge (Saturday)
If you think the air’s cold, you’re not going to believe how cold the water is. That’s right, the Polar Bear Plunge is this weekend at various times.
It was originally a weeklong event, but the Cool Schools plunges were delayed until next week. As of Thursday, though, the Police & Public Safety Plunge and Corporate Plunge are still on for Friday, and the main event is still on for Saturday.
All of the plunges will take place at Sandy Point State Park. Plungefest, a winter village themed for the event, will also be available for participants. Proceeds support Special Olympics Maryland.
Love your Library ice cream beer launch party at Pherm (Saturday)
February is Love Your Library month at Anne Arundel County libraries, and once again, Always Ice Cream and Pherm Brewing Company are coordinating flavors with a new ice cream and beer to raise money for the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation. The Gambrills brewery is holding a launch event for both products Saturday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m.
This year’s flavor is called “The Wonderful Wizard of S’mores.” The ice cream is a cookies and cream with brownie bites, chocolate chunks, a graham cracker crumble, and a vanilla marshmallow swirl. Similarly, the beer will be a “s’mores-inspired Porter.”
If you can’t make it to the event but want to try the flavors, both will be available all month.
Colonial Players Season 78 Sneak Peek (Saturday)
Theater company Colonial Players of Annapolis is holding a sneak peek of its forthcoming season Saturday at 10 a.m. at its East Street building.
Details are scarce, with the event description teasing hints, mischief and that curiosity may be rewarded.
The description ends with “it will satisfy your curiosi-kitty,” which could be teasing the Broadway classic “Cats.” If that is the case, surely the players’ rendition will be better than the movie.
Open Mic Night at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center (Saturday)
The “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center is holding a free open mic night on Saturday evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
They really mean open — performers can do anything from standup comedy to poetry to music. The event is 18-plus.
