Several Eugene businesses are closed while others stand in solidarity and offer a place of respite for those who are participating in the National Shutdown Jan. 30.
The day of action encourages people across the U.S. to not work, go to school or buy anything as a form of protest against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol actions.
The day is modeled after an economic strike in Minnesota organized by faith leaders in which hundreds of businesses closed Jan. 23.
There is a rally at Springfield City Hall and a student-organized gathering at the Eugene Federal Building, the site of a confrontation between protesters and federal law enforcement earlier this week.
