The splendor of San Diego was broadcast on national television throughout the weekend from Wingfoot Three, one of Goodyear’s modern Zeppelin NT airships. The semi-rigid airship, based out of Carson, is in town this weekend to broadcast the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course for CBS. The views from the 246-foot-long airship did not disappoint. While much of the country grappled with freezing temperatures, San Diego reached 80 degrees and had unlimited visibility.
“We’re super excited to be here, it’s gorgeous and sunny,” pilot-in-training Jack Branger said during a flight over the course. “There’s a lot of great things I like about this golf event. The weather’s great. The golf is great. You’re by the ocean, you can see whales, dolphins, things like that, and just the overall natural beauty of San Diego is just amazing.”
The blimp can fly up to 73 mph and holds up to 12 people in its cabin. A total crew of 20 accompanies it on the road, but during golf action, two pilots and a cameraman bring the live coverage.
The airship, which serves the western United States, spent the last few days flying over the tournament while spending its nights at El Cajon’s Gillespie Field.
