Given its A-list cast and home streaming platform, it’s shocking that more people haven’t heard of HBO Max’s Full Circle. From Band of Brothers to Chernobyl, HBO is home to some of the best miniseries of all time, often from top-tier talent like Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Mike Nichols.
Full Circle is no different, as it was created by Ed Solomon, the brilliant co-creator behind the Bill & Ted franchise, and directed by Steven Soderbergh. These creative heavyweights, coupled with the starpower of Western TV icon Timothy Olyphant, should have been enough to drive up viewership numbers, but Full Circle went totally under the radar when it was released in 2023.
What Is Full Circle About?
Definitely a departure from the comedy of Bill & Ted, Full Circle is a mystery drama miniseries about a kidnapping gone incredibly wrong. When wealthy NYC couple Sam and Derek Browne discover that their teenage son Jared has been kidnapped, they are unsurprisingly distraught.
However, this is by no means a straightforward case, as the Brownes have a deep-seated connection to the Guyanese criminal organization that took their son. What began as a very personal crime story expands to broader themes of class, race, and colonialism, which all come to a head in Full Circle’s riveting conclusion.
Full Circle Boasts An Amazing Cast
Timothy Olyphant alone is enough to make a series worth watching, but the Derek Browne actor was joined by one of the best ensembles in recent television legend. TV legend of My So Called Life, Homeland, and The Beast in Me fame, Claire Danes also stars in the Full Circle cast as Derek’s wife, Sam.
A common failing in mystery miniseries is that so many make their law enforcement characters dull and forgettable, but that’s not the case here. Zazie Beetz steals the show as Mel Harmony, the relentlessly tenacious detective investigating the kidnapping, while comedian Jim Gaffigan gives an impressive dramatic turn as her boss, the long-suffering Manny Broward.
Full Circle also boasts Jharrel Jerome, CCH Pounder, Dennis Quaid, and Suzanne Savoy, among its cast, so from a talent standpoint, you can really do no wrong with this underrated HBO show.
Full Circle Is One Of HBO’s Most Underrated Miniseries
Starry mystery miniseries are usually catnip to audiences. In fall 2025, Full Circle’s own Claire Danes led the cast of Netflix’s widely watched mystery thriller The Beast in Me, while All Her Fault — a kidnapping miniseries, just like Full Circle — was released around the same time and also had huge viewership numbers.
HBO also has their share of A-list mystery limited series, from Mare of Easttown and The Undoing, and Full Circle deserves to be in league with them. From the stellar performances of its cast to Steven Soderbergh’s masterful direction, Full Circle is very much a prestige HBO show.
The series was also praised for its authenticity and its focus on unrepresented groups. All of the other aforementioned miniseries feature almost entirely white casts, and though Full Circle features an affluent white family at its center, its depiction of Queens’ Little Guyana neighborhood sets it apart from other NYC-set mysteries that are typically confined to upper-class Manhattan.
Ultimately, Full Circle’s pedigree speaks for itself. Fans of mysteries, any member of its stellar cast, or just good TV in general, must absolutely add this HBO series to their watchlist.
