Adrian Grenier told PEOPLE he is “disappointed” he didn’t get a chance to return in the sequel of “The Devil Wears Prada.”
“I spoke to David Frankel, the director recently,” Grenier, 49, told PEOPLE. “I was disappointed… But, you know, apparently, my character is a controversial character, so he might need his own spinoff.”
Grenier is currently promoting his new thriller “Self Custody.”
The actor played chef Nate in the 2006 original. Nate had a relationship with Andy (Anne Hathaway) in the comedy, but it came to an end after her job made her miss his birthday dinner and he calls her “integrity” into question.
“I can understand the sentiment,” Grenier says, of the thinking that Nate is the film’s villain, before joking, “But I have to stand (up) for my character. If Nate is actually the devil in ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ I’d like to see what his character does beyond, as a spinoff movie.”
