Sandler takes on a smaller role and the film explores more meditative and heartfelt moments, deviating from his usual over-the-top performances.
Adam Sandler has starred in countless Netflix comedies, most of which have been negatively received, but his new upcoming comedy looks totally different and has the potential to be great. You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is a coming-of-age comedy about two best friends who fall out when they both have a crush on the same boy. One of them then conflicted about whether or not to invite the other to her Bat Mitzvah. The movie continues a long-running partnership between Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, and Netflix, as the movie follows other Happy Madison/Netflix movies such as Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, and The Do-Over.
The You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah trailer has many of the staples of an Adam Sandler comedy, such as Sandler being typically sarcastic and pretty cavalier about important issues, and it sees Sandler’s longtime collaborators returning once again. Luis Guzmán and Idina Menzel share screen time with the comedian, and Sandler has seemingly taken inspiration from Judd Apatow by casting his own family. Sunny Sandler, the actor’s daughter, is in the lead role. Nevertheless, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is still a very different Adam Sandler movie from anything that’s come before it, and that’s a good thing.
Adam Sandler Has A Smaller & Different Role In You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah
While audiences are used to seeing Sandler putting on goofy, indistinct accents and acting over the top, the You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah sees him playing an average dad. Sandler leans into it too by being sarcastic to his daughters, telling dad jokes, and simply being irritated when he’s distracted from the TV. However, some shots in the trailer hint at a more meditative and heartfelt performance too, as his daughter goes to him for relationship advice. Even more interestingly, Sandler takes a backseat in the movie, and he seems like more of a supporting actor than the lead in the coming-of-age drama.
This isn’t the first time that Adam Sandler has shocked audiences by playing against type, and he has a history of infrequently pleasantly surprising viewers with untypically dramatic performances. The first time Sandler showcased how great of a dramatic actor he really is was in the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed Punch-Drunk Love, where he played a socially awkward entrepreneur prone to violent outbursts. A steady stream of dramedies followed, including Spanglish and Funny People, but he really stunned the world with the anxiety-inducing thriller Uncut Gems, and Sandler was totally snubbed at the Oscars.
Why Adam Sandler Making A Different Kind Of Comedy Is A Good Thing
Even though they seem to be successful on Netflix and have high viewership numbers, Sandler’s Netflix movies have never been positively received. Every single one of them is rated “rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has been years, maybe even decades, since the last classic Adam Sandler comedy. Happy Madison Productions has seemingly settled into a formula that works for all of its films, but that goofy approach has become tired and outdated. However, the dramedy tone of You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitsvah marks a step forward for the actor and production company, and it could be the start of a new golden age of Adam Sandler comedy movies.
