NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Allegro Charter School of Music in North Charleston allows students to learn to the rhythm of their own beat.
Skyla Sale is the dean of high school at Allegro.
“There’s no audition. Kids who have never picked up an instrument can come and learn guitar, they can learn to play the violin, they learn to play the drums, they can sing their hearts out,” Sale says.
Students at the school get the chance to explore the world of music every day. But lack of funding means they don’t get to experience extracurricular clubs or even formals.
Sale wants to change that.
“Here at Allegro, we want to make sure that all of our students have a lot of fun throughout the year,” Sale says. “It’s a great way to ensure that we keep our attendance and we make sure kids want to come to school but unfortunately the school doesn’t necessarily have a budget for things like dances or activities and so I created a donors choose in hopes of raising money to enrich our school with a lot of activities.”
Money is tight, but students are creative and resourceful. They’re even planning to make their own school t-shirts.
“We have a house system and to give each kid a shirt instead of getting the shirts printed because those are so expensive, we figured we could have the kids tied them in their house colors,” Sale says.
And just like a musical ensemble, every resource is important when it comes to bringing these students’ ideas to life.
“So putting that voice and choice in our students giving them the opportunities to have clubs to have initiatives, all of that takes resources and takes decorations and takes things like scissors and glue to help us make it all come together,” Sale says.
Creativity takes money, and that’s where you come in. Sale says you can help these students who are already working hard to help themselves.
“Many of our high school students, they go to school all day and then they work and the money they use for work goes to things like their activities their gas money, but also bills and helping their family,” Sale says. “And we want to make that, at school they come and that this is a place they can feel celebrated, celebrated for their academic success celebrated for those milestones like being a senior or eighth grade graduation.”
