BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The awards season is now underway as a bevy of Hollywood celebrities and presenters, including Taylor Swift, Angela Bassett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, America Ferrera, Michelle Yeoh and Will Ferrell, make their way to the red carpet this evening for the 81st Golden Globes Awards — wowing fans with chic and eclectic fashion styles as well as sartorial elegance.
Check back later tonight for a full list of winners. Jo Koy marks his debut as master of ceremonies of the annual star-studded awards show, commencing at 5 p.m. PST/ 8 p.m. ET and airing live on CBS. The stand-up comedian and actor was tapped to take the hosting duties for his infectious energy and relatable humor, according to the producers of the event.
Anticipation runs high at this year’s awards ceremony as the Globes attempt to rebuild their prestigious reputation after several scandal-plagued years due to ethical lapses and overreaching practices. As a result, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has long since been dissolved after Eldridge Industries along with Dick Clark Productions acquired the rights and properties to the Golden Globes earlier this year. Subsequently, the Golden Globes also found a new home on CBS after their longtime broadcast partner NBC opted not to renew the contract.
In the film categories, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” dominated the Golden Globe Awards nominations with nine nods for the blockbuster film, including best picture musical or comedy as well as acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and three of its original songs. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” trailed closely behind with eight nominations, including best picture drama as well as acting nominations for actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt.
In the television categories, “Succession” reigned supreme with nine nominations, while “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” scored five nods each. Taylor Swift could win a Golden Globe trophy this evening for the first time ever, as the mega-pop star is nominated for the cinematic and box office achievement award, a brand-new film category honoring a box-office hit that made $100 million domestically and $150 million globally. The other contenders for the award: “Barbie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1,” “Oppenheimer,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “The Super Mario Bros Movie.”
