After Margot Robbie channeled Sharon Tate 50 years after the actress’ death in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Jennifer Lawrence recently recalled chatter that she was up for the role.
When asked about writer/director Quentin Tarantino‘s interest in working with her, the Oscar winner said “he did” want her to star in the 2019 revisionist history ensemble film, but she believes online reactions to the potential casting dissuaded him.
“And then everybody was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’” she recalled on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “And then they didn’t.”
Lawrence added, “I’m pretty sure it is true. Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I believe it. No, but I’m pretty sure that happened. Or he just was never considering me for the part, and the internet just like went out of their way to call me ugly.”
Responding to host Josh Horowitz’s disbelief over the audacity of internet trolls, Lawrence sarcastically quipped, “No, those sweetie pies?”
Meanwhile, Lawrence said she was offered the role of Daisy in Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (2015), which ultimately went to Jennifer Jason Leigh. “I turned it down. I should not have done [that],” admitted Lawrence.
