A Harry Potter villain actor is revealed in first-look images from the upcoming television adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence. The titular characters are detectives, with Tommy played by Buccaneers’ Josh Dylan and Tuppence played by The Good Doctor’s Antonia Thomas in this adaptation, which is a modern reimagining of the source material.
The Hollywood Reporter has now unveiled the first images from the six-part series, which feature Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton alongside Dylan and Thomas. Staunton, who portrayed the villainous Dolores Umbridge in the Wizarding World films, now plays Aunt Ada. Tommy is her nephew, and she is a retired detective with a wry sense of humor. Tommy & Tuppence will be a Britbox show, with the streaming and video on demand service teasing how it will be “contemporary” and what to expect from the eponymous characters. Read their statement below:
In the first contemporary English-language television series adaptation of Agatha Christie’s stories, Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages. Thomas will star as Tuppence, an actress and force of nature who won’t take no for an answer. Dylan will co-star as Tommy, a meticulous, charming crime writer who has lost his passion but finds it again when whirlwind Tuppence re-enters his life.
There are five Tommy & Tuppence books written by Agatha Christie, which were published between 1922 and 1973. The upcoming show’s executive writer and producer, Phoebe Eclair-Powell, discusses how it will adapt the second installment published in 1929, which is a short story collection.
As a lifelong Agatha fan, it was a dream come true to adapt her Partners in Crime and bring Tommy & Tuppence’s spark into a contemporary world. Viewers can expect the high energy sleuthing, caper-ish DNA and romance of the originals, but they have been given such a new lease of life thanks to Antonia and Josh, whose chemistry and delight in the characters just makes it such a joy to watch. And then of course the cherry on top. Imelda Staunton lends such gravitas and wit to the character of Aunt Ada. I know she will become a firm fan favourite. It was an honour to have her at the helm of the show. I hope Agatha would approve!
Christie’s great-grandson, James Prichard, who is the CEO of Agatha Christie Limited, also emphasized that in this contemporary adaptation, “at its heart is my great-grandmother’s storytelling and characters, and I am sure the BritBox audience will love it.”
Britbox is a fitting home for the series, as the service includes the largest collection of Agatha Christie adaptations of any streaming platform available in North America. According to THR, more than a third of the streamer’s subscribers watch new Christie adaptations within the first week they premiere.
Additionally, the adaptations of Christie’s Towards Zero (2025), Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (2022), and Murder Is Easy (2023) are in the top five of Britbox’s best-performing shows during their debut weeks.
In Tommy & Tuppence, Dylan, Thomas, and Staunton are joined by series regulars Nicholas Richardson as movie producer Julius, Charlie Condou as pub owner Albert, Callie Cooke as Sergeant Draper, and Chizzy Akudolu as Detective Inspector Merriot. Sebastian De Souza, Sean Pertwee, Denise Black, and Alice Krige will be guest stars.
