Netflix’s Popular New Rom-Com Continues Its Most Shameless Christmas Movie Trend After Nearly A Decade

Spoiler alert: The following article contains mild spoilers from Hot Frosty.
Netflix’s full slate of holiday films in 2024 includes Hot Frosty, which premiered on November 13 and has quickly become a hit for the streaming service. While it contains all the light-hearted, cheesy, and romantic elements of any typical Netflix Christmas movie, it also features one continuous trend that almost every holiday film on the platform has. In fact, Hot Frosty includes two separate instances where this amusing tradition occurs.
The cast of Hot Frosty includes Lacey Chabert as Kathy and Dustin Milligan as Jack, the two central love interests. In the Christmas fantasy rom-com (which debuted to 100% on Rotten Tomatoes), Kathy owns a diner in the small town of Hope Springs. She lost her husband two years prior and has failed to take care of herself ever since. However, when Kathy receives a magical red scarf that she later gifts a snowman, her entire world changes. Among all the chaos and excitement, though, Hot Frosty continues a long tradition concerning Netflix’s Christmas movies.

After Jack’s snowman turns into a real person in Hot Frosty, Kathy takes him back to her place, where she tells him to watch TV until she can figure out what to do with him. When she turns the TV on, Falling for Christmas, the 2022 Netflix holiday film starring Lindsay Lohan, is playing. Later on in the movie, the 2021 Netflix Christmas flick Single All the Way plays on the TV in Jack’s room while he mopes after a fight with Kathy.

Ever since Netflix began building its Christmas movie universe, the streaming platform has been shameless about self-plugging its own projects in said holiday films and Hot Frosty is no different. By the end of Hot Frosty, two Christmas movies that came before it can be spotted on the TV in two different scenes. Perhaps a Netflix holiday film in 2025 will reference Hot Frosty, continuing the tradition.

Netflix’s Christmas Movie Self-Promotion Has A Fun Twist In Hot Frosty
Hot Frosty Contains A Mean Girls Easter Egg
Not only does Hot Frosty continue the aforementioned Netflix tradition, but it also adds a fun twist to the trend. Lacey Chabert is known for her role as Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls, which also starred Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron. So, when Lohan in Falling for Christmas pops up on Kathy’s TV, Chabert’s character mentions that she looks like a girl she went to high school with, obviously referencing the two actresses’ Mean Girls counterparts. Hot Frosty’s Mean Girls nod is just the cherry on top (and hopefully means that Lohan and Chabert can reunite in a future Netflix Christmas movie).
