PVIAC Track & Field Week 1: West Springfield, Ludlow among top performers in Late Session

NORTHAMPTON — The opening week for the PVIAC Indoor Track season is in the books, as the late session concluded a busy first day of competition on Sunday at Smith College.
Here are a few of the highlights from the late session of competition:
West Springfield racks up victories
The Terriers looked in fine form during. Sunday’s Meet No. 1.
West Side posted five first-place finishes between the boys’ and girls’ meets, and both teams cruised to dual meet victories over Holyoke. The boys’ team won 81-14, and the girls were 72-15 winners.
Top 3 finishers in each event from Sunday’s late session
Morgan Marini won the girls’ 2-mile by over 20 seconds, posting a winning time of 12:56.87, while teammate Nahla Williams captured first in the girls’ shot put with a heave of 37-03.50.
On the boys’ side, Kenniell Velez Santiago made it a 2-mile sweep for West Side as he posted a winning performance of 10:48.85.
Javier Ferrer-Ramos won the high jump with a top clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches, and the boys’ 4×200 relay team was victorious in 1:37.00.
Comp’s Chang, Agawam’s Bates snag multiple wins
It was an impressive opening statement for a pair of athletes on the boys’ side.
Chicopee Comp senior Jisung Chang took first place in a pair of events to set the tone for the Colts. Chang won the 1-mile by nearly 30 seconds with an impressive time of 4:37.86, and also cruised to victory in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:45.96.
Agawam senior Chris Bates was also a double-winner on Sunday. He was first across in the 55 meter dash (6.76 seconds) and leaped to a first-place showing in the long jump (19-04.75).
Greenfield’s Mason Youmell nearly joined them, as he won the 600 meters (1:31.69) and was second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.50 seconds).
Ludlow girls well-represented in top 3
The Lions impressed in their opening meet, taking down Westfield via a 77-13 dual victory on Sunday.
Ludlow won two events on the girls’ side and scored an impressive five runner-up showings to rack up the points.
Faith Keroack won the high jump for the Lions (5-00.00), and Audrey Afonso took first in the long jump (15-09.50), just ahead of teammate Gabrielle Gauvin (second place, 14-09.00).
Besides Gauvin, Ludlow received second-place finishes in the girls’ events from Savannah Williams (shot put, 28-02.75), Katherine Anselmo (2-mile, 13:19.06), Keroack (55m hurdles, 10.08) and Avelin Sargent (55m, 7.75).
Joshua Moret paced the Ludlow boys with a win in the 300 meters (36.90 seconds).
