Monroe County Executive Adam Bello is urging residents to take precautions as heavy snow, powerful winds and dangerously cold temperatures are expected to impact the region through Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory and Winter Weather Advisory for Monroe County through 10 a.m. Saturday. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, with wind chills dropping as low as 25 degrees below zero, creating hazardous travel conditions and safety concerns.
A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday, with heavy snow and potentially significant accumulations expected.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm. Residents are encouraged to monitor local media and Monroe County social media channels for the latest updates.
“I am urging our community to stay prepared, stay informed, and most importantly, stay safe during these dangerous winter weather events,” Bello said. “Staying indoors when possible and limiting unnecessary travel helps reduce risk.”
Code Blue in effect
A Code Blue designation is in effect across New York state. Monroe County’s Department of Human Services is conducting outreach to connect people experiencing homelessness with emergency shelter.
Anyone in need of shelter, or who knows someone who is, can call 211 Life Line for assistance. If shelters reach capacity, alternate accommodations will be arranged.
During Code Blue, individuals can also request free RTS transportation to warming shelters from any bus stop. If a shelter is not directly on a bus route, RTS staff will assist riders at the transit center with transfers to shelters that have available space.
Monroe County warming centers:
Open Door Mission, 156 N. Plymouth Ave., Rochester (RTS routes 15, 21)
House of Mercy, 285 Ormond St., Rochester (RTS route 3)
