Iconic Texas musician Joe Ely is being remembered for his impact on music in the Lone Star State and beyond after he died Monday.
He was 78.
Ely’s family confirmed the legendary singer, songwriter and raconteur whose roots ran from Amarillo to Lubbock to Austin and beyond was with his wife Sharon and daughter Marie when he died Monday at their home in Taos, New Mexico from complications of Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s and pneumonia, according to a post on Ely’s Facebook page.
He was inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 1989 as a solo artist and later, in 2016, as a member of The Flatlanders, according to Avalanche-Journal archives.
