A blizzard is said to be descending upon a large chunk of the U.S. from the Midwest to the East Coast — so grab your groceries, light your fireplaces and bundle up because you have no excuse to miss out on this week’s movies and shows.
This weekend, Jan. 24-25, true crime is back in full swing with Netflix’s look back on an infamous kidnapping that rocked the nation and Paramount+’s deep dive into a Florida criminal whose mugshot caused an online frenzy.
On a lighter note, the ever-employed Ryan Murphy put out yet another show, leaning back into his horror roots and putting his pulse on the culture with its subject matter, as he always does.
And there’s more! Here’s a list of the eight best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them.
The Testament of Ann Lee
Amanda Seyfried’s latest movie’s tagline is “put your trust in Mother Ann” — and you don’t have to tell us twice!
Seyfried takes her role as mother (in the movie, to be taken as a religious leader; in our hearts, to be taken as the colloquial saying, “she is mother”) seriously in The Testament of Ann Lee, overseeing her followers in a move across the Atlantic as a rare woman preacher. But when her jurisdiction comes into question (because any woman leading a religious sect is obviously a witch … ), everything she’s worked for is threatened. Oh, and she sings about it.
The Testament of Ann Lee releases in theaters on Jan. 23.
Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart
Nearly 25 years ago, a 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped out of her childhood bedroom, with only her 9-year-old sister as a witness. While in most cases like this one, the child is never seen again, nine months later, the teen was reunited with her family — who went as far as going against police orders in their search for her.
In this emotional documentary, Smart and members of her family look back on the traumatic events, as the now mom of three shares new details of that horrific year — and how her little sister’s memory led to the kidnappers’ capture.
Watch Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart on Netflix.
The Beauty
In the world of weight loss drugs becoming as easy to get as painkillers and cosmetic procedures as simple to do as making a doctor’s appointment, it’s no surprise the amount of media satirizing these concepts has skyrocketed, from The Substance to Murphy’s latest: The Beauty.
Ashton Kutcher stars as The Corporation, an evil entrepreneur who has invented a drug that’ll turn its user beautiful — and can spread as an STD. However, when models taking it start turning into murderous beasts, the FBI (starring Murphy-favorite Evan Peters in a surprisingly good-guy role!) gets involved.

Queer Eye season 10
It’s been 10 years of the Fab Five coming into regular people’s lives and changing them with a fresh hairdo, new wardrobe, renovated home, refined taste palette and a shiny outlook on life. But now, that era is coming to a close.
The show is as uplifting as ever as they take on Washington D.C., and each of the beloved stars says their individual goodbyes.

Steal
The multi-million dollar heist that kicks off Steal is just the beginning — the twists and turns throughout are where it really gets juicy.
Zara (Sophie Turner) is a trade processor at a pensions investment firm who is forced to transfer millions to robbers when they infiltrate her firm. But there’s more to Zara than meets the eye …

Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man
Mel Brooks has been making people laugh for nearly a century — and by all accounts, he doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Directed by Judd Apatow, Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man looks back at the legendary comedian’s life and impact, as told by a handful of his peers from Ben Stiller to Conan O’Brien.

Handsome Devil: The Charming Killer
Wade Wilson may share a name with a Marvel hero, but that’s where the similarities end. The Florida man murdered two women, but instead of scaring away future relationship prospects, women online only became more drawn to his charming persona and boyish good looks.
As his trial was ongoing, Wilson began tattooing his face, which attracted certain women who began showing up in court and expressing their love for him. Now, those involved in the case are speaking out in a three-part documentary.

Memory of a Killer
Patrick Dempsey is eager to shed his hero Dr. McDreamy status as he’s racking up the list of bad boy killers he’s played in recent years. The newest item? Angelo, a photocopier-selling loving father by day, a New York City assassin by night in Memory of a Killer.
While Angelo has always built up a fierce wall between his real job and his small-town persona, the line begins to fade as his memory starts to crumble upon receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Now, everything he’s worked for is at threat of blowing up, and the one thing that matters above all — his daughter — is in danger.
