MOUNT PLEASANT — When Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum unveiled its centerpiece ship nearly 50 years ago, the USS Yorktown was still fresh in the pluff mud and the cost of admission was $1 for visitors in uniform and kids and $2 for everyone else.
The state-owned and -operated military attraction is now taking its pricing back to early 1976. Admission is reverting to the original rates for one day only, on Jan. 3.
Tickets must be purchased online and in advance.
The “Throwback Day” kicks off a year-long series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the day the Yorktown was opened to the public along the Mount Pleasant waterfront. Nearly 5,000 visitors braved cold, damp weather to tour the ship in those first 48 hours, according to a news report.
