Those in search of what movies to watch on Netflix this weekend can find an exciting variety of projects to check out in this week’s list, all of which recently dropped on the streaming service. On last weekend’s Netflix movie recommendations, I crafted a list with two romantic movies of different tones ahead of Valentine’s Day and a sci-fi hit.
I thought about that because there were quite a few exciting new movies on Netflix this week that were not properly suited for Valentine’s Day but are perfect for those looking for a weekend movie binge. Only one of those is a Netflix Original movie, with the other two being box office hits that are part of film franchises.
3 State of Fear (2026)
First up is State of Fear. The Brazilian movie is a spinoff from Brotherhood, a Netflix crime thriller series that released two seasons between 2019 and 2022. The film continues the story of two characters from the show, Elisa and Cristina, as the Brotherhood gang orders a series of attacks against the police when its leaders are transferred to maximum-security prisons.
While those who watched the original series will have an enhanced experience watching State of Fear, the movie directed by Pedro Morelli can be watched by new viewers with no issues. The chaos created by the gang’s “State of Fear” order makes for an action-packed movie full of shocking moments for crime thriller fans.
2 The Black Phone (2021)
Next up is the movie that started an exciting horror franchise. The Black Phone is now a Netflix streaming sensation, instantly becoming the second most-watched movie on the streaming service in the United States a day after it arrived on Netflix. If you haven’t yet checked it out, this supernatural thriller with Ethan Hawke makes for the perfect spooky night session.
The Black Phone follows the story of Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), a young boy who is kidnapped by Hawke’s serial killer, The Grabber. Through a phone that keeps ringing, he is able to talk to all the murderer’s past victims and try to find a way to escape where they failed. The young cast, Thames and Madeleine McGraw, deliver magnetic performances.
1 How to Train Your Dragon (2025)
February’s second weekend seems to belong to Mason Thames when it comes to Netflix. The final recommendation on the list is How to Train Your Dragon, a 2025 remake of the hit animated movie. Just like the original, Thames’ live-action adaptation has led to a new franchise, given the movie’s $636.3 million worldwide box office run.
The fantasy movie tells the story of a Thames’ Hiccup, who befriends a dragon, Toothless, and completely changes the way that his village sees the formidable beasts. How to Train Your Dragon is currently the most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States, so if you haven’t yet checked out the remake, which is as good as the original, it makes for a compelling watch this weekend on Netflix.
