After hitting theaters in September, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has now crossed another big box office milestone, cementing itself as one of Tim Burton’s best-performing movies of all time. Serving as a sequel to his 1988 cult classic, Burton’s latest film picks up decades later, following three generations of Deetzs in Winter River as Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega) accidentally summons Michael Keaton’s Betelgeuse. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reviews have been generally positive from critics, and the film has been a major box office success.
As Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remains in theaters, Collider reports that the film grossed $820,000 domestically in its tenth weekend, bringing its worldwide total to a staggering $450 million. Domestically, the Beetlejuice sequel has grossed $293 million, besting Dune: Part Two ($282M) to become Warner Bros.’ best-performing movie of the year. For Burton, the film’s worldwide gross puts it as his third highest-grossing movie ever, behind 2011’s Alice in Wonderland ($1.025B) and 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ($475M).

With both audiences and critics, Burton’s follow-up to his 1988 film has been a success. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes is a respectable 77% and its audience score is a bit higher at 79%. Made on a budget of about $100 million, the film was likely looking at a break-even point of between $200 million and $250 million, both figures that it clearly exceeded. With such success, it would be natural for ideas to emerge regarding a third installment.

Though the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ending does leave the door open for more story, there’s thus far been no confirmation about another movie. Burton hasn’t directly addressed the possibility yet, but his interview with Total Film in August could make his feelings clear when it says that he “noticeably squirms at the suggestion of a Beetlejuice franchise.” Turning his idiosyncratic horror-fantasy into a major blockbuster trilogy might not be on the cards for Burton.

Let This Be Betelgeuse’s Last Outing
Though it would be fun to return to Burton’s twisted world for Beetlejuice 3, it would probably be better to leave the story alone, especially if Burton himself has reservations about continuing. Though positive, the response to the sequel wasn’t quite as positive as the response to the original, and a third movie could see the critical response drop further as the story is stretched beyond its natural end point. Instead, Betelgeuse should go out on a high note, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with its box office success, is just that.
