ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) – River Prairie Park was full of wintertime cheer this weekend with two family fun events.
“We try and have people come out in the winter to enjoy the indoors and the outdoors in particular.” Erin Turner, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Altoona said.
The event, called Wintertide is hosted by the City of Altoona. With events meant for everyone.
“So we have a scavenger hunt that is throughout River Prairie Park today along with kubb that people can play, a snowman building area.” Turner said.
For those who need to de thaw from the cold, there were also indoor activities.
“Inside the River Prairie Center we have bingo, we have board games, we have a puzzle contest we have board games, kids crafts, we also have food that you can purchase.” Turner said.
And maybe the biggest draw of the weekend, the US Crokicurl Championship was happening for community members to participate in or watch.
“Crokicurl is one of the most unique winter sports in the United States. We are home to the first crokicurl rink in the us.” Roy Atkinson, City Administrator for the City of Altoona said.
Crokicurl is a combination of curling and the board game crokinole. The game is played on ice which has led to problems in previous years.
“We’re so excited to host this event. Just very happy that mother nature was conducive and we have a nice frozen rink. Were excited to have folks from the Chippewa Valley out to enjoy this awesome event today.” Atkinson said.
The championship began at 9 am and had 14 teams competing in it.
Organizers say that they enjoy the opportunities that this event allows community members to get outside this winter season.
