Catherine O’Hara’s died as a result of a pulmonary embolism.
The cause of death was reported by TMZ, which obtained her death certificate on Monday. The “Home Alone” star also had rectal cancer as an underlying condition.
O’Hara, who was also known for her roles in “Schitt’s Creek,” “Beetlejuice” and “Best In Show,” died Jan. 30 at her Los Angeles home after being hospitalized early that morning with an illness.
Her most recent work came opposite Seth Rogen in the Apple TV+ series, “The Studio.” She earned an Emmy nomination for her work.
O’Hara won an Emmy Award for “Schitt’s Creek” in 2020, her second Emmy of her career. The first was came in 1982 for her writing contributions to the sketch comedy TV series, “SCTV Network 90.”
O’Hara’s career was launched at the Second City in Toronto in the in 1970s. It was there that she first worked with Eugene Levy, who would become a lifelong collaborator — and her “Schitt’s Creek” costar. The two would be among the original cast of the sketch show “SCTV,” which would help launch the careers of other top Canadian comedians, like Martin Short and Andrea Martin.
O’Hara’s dramatic turn in HBO’s “The Last of Us” earned her an Emmy nomination, as did her recent role as a Hollywood producer in “The Studio.”
She is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and sons Matthew and Luke.
