MONTE VISTA – The Monte Vista and Centauri high school girls wrestling teams opened the Intermountain League dual meet schedule Thursday at the MVHS gym with the Pirates coming out on top.
It was a matter of the numbers game as Monte Vista had the advantage in that category. The Pirates dressed out 10 wrestlers while the Falcons only five.
Monte Vista won the dual meet by a score of 45-12.
Monte Vista struck early as Anahi Murietta pinned Beijah Sowards at 100 pounds. Murietta scored a takedown and a four-point near fall before Sowards reversed the hold. Murietta then got an escape and another takedown, and she then beat the clock as she pinned Sowards in 1:58.
Jessamy Pacheco then received a forfeit at 105 to increase the Pirates’ lead to 12-0.
Hailey Black pushed the lead to 18-0 as she pinned Juliana Rendon at 110 pounds. Black recorded a takedown and a two-point near fall, but Rendon scored a reversal. Black started in the bottom position to begin the second period and got a reversal and another two-point near fall before finishing Rendon at the 3:43 mark.
The Falcons got their first win of the meet at 115 pounds as Mckenzie Torres pinned Mariah Molina. Torres made quick work of Molina as she recorded the fall at 1:40.
Emma Taylor earned a forfeit at 120 for a 24-6 Monte Vista lead.
Lauren Gallegos cut the lead to 24-12 in the 135-pound match as she pinned Tirza Sanchez in just 49 seconds.
The final match on the mat was at 140 pounds as Annika Butero won by a 9-3 decision over Sophia Rendon. Butero scored a takedown and a four-point near fall to take a 7-0 lead after the first period. Rendon opened the second period with a takedown, but Butero escaped and held an 8-3 lead. Butero wrapped up the scoring with an escape in the third period.
Addison Temple (145), Kaliah Stucky (155) and Malia Martinez-Castro (170) all earned forfeit wins to conclude the meet.
Monte. Vista’s next action will be on Jan. 23-24 as it will travel to Castle Rock for the Tiara Challenge.
Centauri will host the Randy and Naomi Keys dual meet invitational on Jan. 24.
