Winter camping is available at Beaver Lake and the White River below Beaver Dam at Army Corps of Engineers parks. Beaver Lake campsites may be reserved at Prairie Creek, Lost Bridge North, Horseshoe Bend and Hickory Creek parks. Sites may be reserved at Dam Site River on the White River below Beaver Dam. Go to recreation.gov to reserve campsites.
Build a survival shelter
A free introductory program on survival techniques, fire starting and shelter building will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Janet Huckabee River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith. Call the center at (501) 710-6285 to register.
Get certified to burn
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will host a free course Dec. 11-12 to certify landowners as qualified prescribed burners. The first day is a classroom day and the second day is hands on. The course will be held near Decatur. Registration is required. Register and get directions at the Hunt Family Springdale Nature Center website or call the center at (833) 356-0847.
Find a geocache
A free program on geocaching will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Hunt Family Nature Center in Springdale. Students will learn the basics of geocaching and hunt for caches on the nature center grounds. They will also learn how to hunt for caches in their neighborhoods. Call the nature center at (833) 356-0847 to register.
