With many of the most beloved anime films of the 1980s and 1990s being scattered, difficult to track down, or even outright unavailable, the latest news about Ninja Scroll coming to HIDIVE is a welcome development. According to a recent HIDIVE press release from November 6, 2024, Ninja Scroll will be available to watch on-demand via the streaming service on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at noon EDT. For fans of boundary-pushing anime from a different era, Ninja Scroll is commonly considered among the best films of the 1990s and a must-watch for fans of the classics.
Ninja Scroll follows rogue ninja Kibagami Jubei as he fights to stop the Devils of Kimon from overthrowing the Japanese government of the Edo period. Jubei is aided by Tokugawa Shogunate spy Dakuan and Kōga kunoichi Kagero. The film is animated by Madhouse and received a follow-up anime, Ninja Scroll: The Series, in 2003 for one season, yet it ultimately received no subsequent content beyond that. The series is a beloved classic and may constitute a strong selling point for HIDIVE streaming service subscriptions.

One of the Best Anime Films of the 1990s Exits Streaming Hell
Thanks to HIDIVE’s confirmation, Ninja Scroll finally finds a streaming home months after Anime News Network reported Manga Entertainment’s U.S. license rights to the series expired. With shows like Cowboy Bebop and films like Akira being available on-demand through Crunchyroll, and even 1995’s Ghost in the Shell available on Tubi, Ninja Scroll, despite being a sensation in the United States and helping inspire The Matrix, is only now getting the love it deserves. With HIDIVE recently simulcasting the hit Oshi no Ko adaptation’s second season, this is another strong draw for the service.
Ninja Scroll recently enjoyed a theatrical re-release thanks to AX Cinema Nights 2024, where it was screened at a limited quantity of cinemas in the United States on September 11, 12, and 15, 2024. The film was featured alongside multiple classics across its decade and beyond, including Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Paprika, and Metropolis 2001. While this is a significant development for the Ninja Scroll fans, its animation studio also benefits from this additional exposure.
