Calling Prime Video’s slate of original movies in 2025 a mixed bag would be charitable. If I were being harsh, I could say the streaming service has been offering subscribers mostly skippable movies over the last almost 11 months.
I was excited for new Prime Video movies like “Holland” and “Another Simple Favor,” but they fell way below my expectations, and even the ones with lower anticipation levels, like “You’re Cordially Invited,” “The Pickup” and “The Map That Leads to You,” were far from worthwhile. The less said about Ice Cube’s truly bizarre modern take on “The War of the Worlds,” the better.
Fortunately, there have been at least a few new Prime Video movies released in 2025 so far that I can recommend you add to your watchlist. So, looking over the 20 (English-language) original movies that debuted on Prime Video this year to date, these are the three that actually deserve your attention.
Best Prime Video movies of 2025 (so far)
‘Unstoppable’
“Unstoppable” is a great reminder that movies don’t necessarily have to do something unique to be worthwhile. The nuts and bolts of “Unstoppable” are routine: It’s an inspirational sports drama based on real-life wrestler, Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg. It follows a predictable path, but thanks to a winning performance from Jharrel Jermon as Robles, and great support from Michael Peña, Don Cheadle and Jennifer Lopez, “Unstoppable” takes a fairly standard sports biopic framework and earns its gold medal.
Born without a right leg, Robles develops a passion for wrestling in his high school days. Facing societal prejudice and various physical hurdles, he refuses to let his dreams be just that, and thanks to his perseverance, he fights his way onto the Arizona State Wrestling team and pushes forward to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming an NCAA champion. Watching over him are his supportive mother (Lopez) and dedicated coaching team.
