Things to do for Thanksgiving in the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – As the air grows colder, people’s hearts are growing warmer because Thanksgiving is nearly here.
Thanksgiving has been a national holiday in the United States since 1863. Taking place the final Thursday of November, the holiday allows Americans to come together with loved ones to give thanks for the blessings of the year ahead of the winter season.
To celebrate the holiday, WIS News 10 has compiled some community events to make your Thanksgiving a little brighter.
Tuesday, Nov. 26
Stanley Law Group and Toliver’s Mane Event Turkey Giveaway
The Stanley Group is partnering with Toliver’s Mane Event Barbershop on Tuesday to give turkeys to those in need. One turkey will be given to each vehicle that shows up while supplies last.
The giveaway will take place at the barbershop on N. Main Street in Columbia beginning at 10 a.m.
Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day)
20th Annual Turkey Day 5K
The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands are joining to host their 20th annual Thanksgiving Day 5K to celebrate the holiday.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday morning at Colonial Life Arena, the race serves as a fundraiser for the Clubs, which support local youth development programs.
Awards will be presented to race winners and to the best-dressed runner. Click here for more information.
Chappelle Memorial AME Church Community Outreach Dinner
To celebrate the holiday by providing for those in need, Chappelle Memorial AME Church is hosting their annual Community Outreach Dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
The dinner takes place at Chappelle Memorial on Pine Street in Columbia from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Radius Church
Radius Church is also hosting a community dinner on Thanksgiving Day to provide hot meals for those community members in need.
The dinner takes place at noon at Radius Church on Platt Springs Road in Lexington.
Harvest Hope Food Bank
The Palmetto State’s largest food bank continues to seek support as they work to provide for hungry South Carolinians. For those seeking to give back this holiday, you can volunteer your time or donate food/money.

Friday, Nov. 29 (Black Friday)
Shandon Turkey Trot and Burn 5K 2024
Taking place the day after Thanksgiving Day, the Trot & Burn race in Columbia’s Shandon neighborhood is sure to cause you to burn some calories gained during Thanksgiving dinner.
The race takes place at 10 a.m. near Craft and Draft on Devine Street. It costs $40 to register for the race, with the proceeds going to the Shandon Neighborhood Council, which provides neighborhood improvements. For more information, click here.
