Ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day around Anchorage

Hoops 4 Unity: 6-7:30 p.m. Friday; Fairview Recreation Center, 1121 E. 10th Ave.
This initiative is designed to bring kids age 7-18 together with local law enforcement for basketball and connection. Hoops 4 Unity provides a platform to foster understanding and build constructive relationships between minority youth and police officers in the Anchorage community. Register online.
Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation of Alaska’s Community-wide Celebration: 3 p.m. Sunday; Bettye Davis East Anchorage High, 4025 E. Northern Lights Blvd.
This annual event is organized by the local chapter of the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible: Building Community & Uniting a Nation.”
The program includes multiple guest greetings, quotes from local youth, the MLK Beloved Community Choir and much more.
MLK Day Volunteer Opportunity: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday; Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, 3427 East Tudor Road
Join the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness in assembling kits for people sleeping outdoors to distribute during the January Point-in-Time Count later this month.
Free Legal Help: Noon-4 p.m. Monday; Mountain View Community Center, 315 Price St.
The Alaska Bar Association, the Alaska Court System, Alaska Legal Services Corporation, ACLU of Alaska and local bar associations host this annual event. The event invites low- to moderate-income Alaskans to get free legal consultation (20-30 minutes, depending on location) with a volunteer attorney to confidentially answer questions on civil (non-criminal) legal issues. Civil issues may include disaster assistance, family law, landlord/tenant, public benefits, employment law, probate and personal injury issues. First come, first served, no appointment needed. Similar events will be held in Bethel, Fairbanks and Juneau on Monday.

Hosted by the Alaska Black Caucus, this free event features vendors, free pizza, cultural performances and community fellowship.
R.C. Woodson will perform hosting duties, while state Sen. Elvi Gray-Jackson, Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Assembly Chair Christopher Constant are scheduled to speak.
