Inside the tiny storefront that is The Village Library in Jacobus, three members of The York Symphony Orchestra helped tell a York County Libraries story time for an eager audience of kids and moms on March 10. Symphony Story Time is a classic library story time for young children, punctuated with music that sets the mood and expands the words.
“We love the concert hall, but we love playing around books,” violinist James Tung said, adding that it’s fun to be around the kids while playing.
The York Symphony trio of Tung, Jenny Huerter, on viola, and Sara Male on cello would chime in with carefully coordinated, short pieces of classical music during a reading of “Oona,” the story of a brave little mermaid searching for a very special treasure.
“I think all music is so emotionally driven and character driven that the marriage of storyline and peace and emotion…makes perfect sense,” Tung said referring to how well music blends and helps tell a story.
“It is really central, so central for child development, it’s huge for literacy skills, social and emotional wellbeing,” Bre Winters, a York Libraries youth services program manager said, referring to the role of music in early child development.
The three day tour around York County, which stopped in northern York County, Red Lion and Hanover, ends on March 11 with visits to Dover Area Community Library at 10:30 a.m. and Martin Library at 4 p.m.
