Scottie Scheffler Makes Significant Equipment Change as He Snaps Rare Slump at the Arnold Palmer Invitational

After poor starts on four back-to-back events this season, Scottie Scheffler finally broke his curse at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He shot a 70 on a 72-par course. And that came with a change in equipment.
For nearly two years, the world number one used the TaylorMade Qi10 to tee it off. But he has been testing the TaylorMade Qi4D driver since last fall. But what’s special in the new driver that enhanced Scheffler’s game at Bay Hill Club and Lodge?
“I feel like what we have seen is more consistent spin numbers,” the 29-year-old told the media after breaking his Thursday slump at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “So that will help it be a little bit more accurate off the tee.”
“Directionally, I struggled a little bit with it at the start of the year, but I got to what I thought was a really good spot last week, and I liked what I saw today.”
He gained 0.608 off the tee today and averaged 322.9 yards. With a score of two-under 70, Scheffler is currently tied for the 18th spot.
But the new driver still carries a subtle familiarity. The TaylorMade Qi4D has Scheffler’s usual Fujikura Ventus Black Velocore 7 X shaft. And the face is the custom blue carbon face, similar to the one on his previous driver.
And the change came after he struggled getting into the TaylorMade Qi35. Struggling with that driver made him realize what he needs in his drivers. Thanks to the designers at the company, Scottie Scheffler got his new driver with consistent spin and ball flight.
However, there’s still one question that demands an answer.
Did a Subpar Opening Round at Bay Hill Satisfy Scottie Scheffler?
At the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler didn’t just score a two-under par. He also made four birdies and two bogeys in the first round. But is he satisfied with the way he played?
“I think being satisfied is always a bit of a stretch in golf,” Scheffler answered. “No, I feel like I did some really good things. I felt like I made a couple mistakes that I shouldn’t have, but overall I did some really good stuff out there. Anything under par on this golf course is a decent score.”
If the consistent spin numbers continue and directional control improves, Scheffler can find his way back to the top of the leaderboard.
